Wesel Rhine bridge
The Wesel Rhine bridge, in Germany

Donges SteelTec GmbH, a Hitachi Power Europe (HPE) subsidiary, was recently involved with the construction of the new Wesel Rhine bridge in Germany, supplying the steel structure for the new crossing and putting the final weld into place. The bridge crossing the Rhine is 770m long and the striking A-shaped pylon is 130m high.

Work on building the new crossing commenced in May 2005 and is due to be completed in November this year. It will replace the provisional yet long-standing bridge which is now 50 years old and can no longer cope with the continuous increase in traffic (approximately 28,000 vehicles on average each day).

The crossing is an engineering structure of real excellence – the cable-stayed bridge does not need any pillars in the water and therefore does not impede navigation. Its entire weight is supported by a single pylon on the left bank of the Rhine. “The structure represents an impressive reference for the expertise of our colleagues at Donges SteelTec GmbH”, said HPE Managing Director Wolfgang Marschewski. The HPE subsidiary ranks amongst the leading steel and bridge building companies in Germany.
