La Robla
“La Robla” power plant

Hitachi Power Europe (HPE) specialists have used improved burners and up-to-date environmental technology to bring about a substantial lowering of emissions in two Spanish power plants. As a result, the two plants of “La Robla 2” and “Narcea 3” can now act as references for future projects to demonstrate HPE's competence in boiler optimisation and flue gas cleaning.

Both coal power plants in Asturia, northern Spain, which supply electricity principally to Oviedo, the province's capital, and the steel industry which has settled there, are over 25 years old. The technology in use then no longer meets the stringent environmental protection requirements within the European Community. Standards imposed on the output of nitrogen oxides, sulphur dioxide and coal dusts are particularly tough and power plant operators have to modernise their plants within certain periods.

HPE obtained orders to modernise the “La Robla” and “Narcea” power plants, and following retrofitting, a pronounced reduction in flue gas emissions was noted – 60% in the case of nitrogen oxides (NOx), over 95% for sulphur dioxide (SO2) and over 50% for coal dust.

The logistics and transport of the components presented a particular challenge as the storage areas were very restricted at both power plant sites. The system parts were manufactured not only in Germany but also in Poland, Denmark and Ireland and were delivered by truck on a just-in-time basis for immediate fitting onsite, with everything moved along narrow mountainous roads between deep canyons!
