Hitachi has been at the forefront of developing efficient technologies and solutions that provide sustainable benefits for decades. Hitachi is committed to providing a better future for generations to come and therefore embarked on several environmental programmes to benefit society in the short and long term.

To address sustainable needs, Hitachi has three sustainable programmes:

Medium-Term Environmental Vision 2015

Long-Term Environmental Vision 2025

  • Environmental Vision 2015 – Achieve emission neutral by pursuing production that reduces the environmental burden of products throughout their life cycle. We intend to achieve this by reducing the environmental load of production activities, while at the same time improving the environmental efficiency of products to reduce their environmental load.
  • Environmental Vision 2025 – The goal of our Environmental Vision 2025 is to help reduce annual CO2 emissions by 100 million tonnes by 2025 through our products and services using our combined technological strengths.
  • CoolCenter50* – Please note: CoolCentre50 is a project delivered by Hitachi Ltd. in Japan seeking to used the combined power of the Hitachi group to develop data centres which reduce data centres' overall power consumption by up to 50% of their FY2007 level by FY2012.

The global demand for data continues to grow at a staggering pace. The result is increased demand for server space, server density, and power requirements to fuel the data centre requirements. With emissions from data centres on the rise corporations understand a change from the norm is required. As a result, in 2007 Hitachi embarked on the CoolCenter50 programme. The CoolCenter50 programme is a commitment by Hitachi to reduce DC power consumption by 50% in a span of 5 years. In order to achieve this goal Hitachi brought together the collective product innovation of the Hitachi group, encompassing a host of technologies to drive efficiencies including next generation IT equipment as well as efficient cooling solutions, power supplies, switchgear, and management software.

Case Study : Yokohama 3 Data Centre

Delivering on the CoolCenter50 commitment is important for Hitachi, its customers, and society. Hitachi is proud to announce that the first stage of CoolCenter50 has been achieved. Yokohama 3, the new state-of-the-art data centre brings together the collective product innovations of the Information & Telecommunication Systems Company designed to achieve a 1.6 PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness) rating by The Green Grid. The approximately 10,000sqm green facility is rated as being as robust and reliable as a Tier IV level data centre which according to the Uptime Institute is currently the highest level of availability. This sophisticated architecture is designed to offer the highest levels of energy efficiency, while also lowering IT management costs. Optimised to deliver even greater power efficiencies, the facility also features cutting-edge Hitachi products:

  • Thermal hydraulic cooling devices
  • Uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems
  • Highly advanced power supply converters are designed to work in concert to contribute significant power savings
  • Leading-edge patented Hitachi Finger Vein authentication and other RFID technologies
  • Hitachi Adaptable Modular Storage and Workgroup Modular Storage midrange systems delivery breakthrough Power Savings capabilities (20% cost of operation advantage against competitors)

European Data Centre Activity

Hitachi in Europe recognises the evolving ICT demands and required infrastructure changes which are necessary in order to ensure a resilient and robust operating environment for today’s data centres and associated technologies within.

Developing and operating a resilient and efficient data centre is heavily dependant on the design and associated components which the data centre is comprised of. The Hitachi group has more than 20 years experience in the design, development, and operating of data centres. In fact, our experience goes much deeper as we have developed technologies which sole purpose is to provide resilient and efficient facilities. Many of these technologies are in Hitachi's latest data centre in Yokohama and include Hitachi's Inverter Packaged Air Conditioning system, Amorphous Transformer, Finger Vein Security Solution, Rear Door Cooling Units, In-Row (Rack Type) Cooling Units, as well as Information Technology products such as Hitachi Data Storage, Blade Servers, plus more.

To materialise and exhibit our vision towards the future of data centres, the Eco Data Centre team established an operating demo room at Hitachi Data Systems in Sefton Park in which we are able to showcase our lineup of products, our technologies, and demonstrate the eco efficiencies of the collective product innovations of the Hitachi group.

Encompassing energy efficient facilities, optimised configuration, and state-of-the-art green IT technology, the Eco Data Centre demo room is designed to illustrate the efficiency benefits and the environmental benefits gained when collating a number of Hitachi's products.

The facility at Hitachi integrates a variety of different Hitachi hardware and software technologies.

Environmental considerations are at the forefront of today's requirements when designing, building, and operating a data centre. Operating costs are constantly being scrutinised as well as legislation focusing on power consumption and carbon emissions.
