Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Event Report
(Released in June 2014)
Hitachi's approach to community engagement is a clear expression of its vision to answer society's challenges. Hitachi accomplishes this through actively working with its local communities through various activities in three identified categories; education, the environment and community support.
In the education category, Hitachi Construction Machinery UK have loaned brand new, heavy earth moving machines from Hitachi's new eco and fuel efficient range of excavators to Coleg Menai in Wales. The partnership not only benefits the college's students but helps play a pivotal role in the regeneration of the local and regional economy to ensure an effective local supply chain is ready to be employed for major infrastructure projects proposed for Anglesey over the coming years.
Hitachi Data Systems (HDS) opened a European Distribution Centre (EDC) in Zaltbommel, The Netherlands in 2013. The facility is energy neutral and has been BREEAM certified. It is the first building of its kind to limit its use of natural resources, with no use of natural gas at all. Climate control of the concrete building is managed using insulated walls, geothermal air conditioners and under floor heating. It is also the largest unsubsidised solar project on a single building in Europe. The 6,200 solar panels (17,000m2) on the roof of the building have a production capacity of 1.4MW of electricity. To maximise efficiency and reduce waste the facility is lit by low energy LED lamps, has electric car and bicycle charging points so that employees can charge their vehicles at work and harvests rainwater which is reused in the building's water systems. Other facilities in Europe are also working to become recognised eco-factories.
An example of community support is Hitachi Europe Ltd.'s new partnership with MacMillan Cancer Support. The charity partnership commenced with a “Go Green Sports Week” in June 2014 during which employees raised nearly £2,500 taking part in activities including a cycle challenge, football competitions and a fun day. The money raised was then matched by the company. Hitachi Europe has committed to continue raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support until at least June 2015.
