Hitachi to Promote Cooperation with Veolia Water Technologies, the World Leader in Water Treatment, on Overseas Water Infrastructure Projects

Hitachi to Promote Cooperation with Veolia Water Technologies, the World Leader in Water Treatment, on Overseas Water Infrastructure Projects Accelerating the Global Rollout of the Water Environment Solutions Business Tokyo, Japan, June 11, 2014 --- Hitachi, Ltd. (TSE: 6501, “Hitachi”) today announced that it has reached an agreement and completed a memorandum with Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies SA (“Veolia Water Technologies”) to promote cooperation on water infrastructure projects. Based on this agreement, Hitachi will participate in water infrastructure projects that are expected to be in increasing demand, mainly in emerging countries, thereby further accelerating the global rollout of its water environment solutions business.

The distribution of freshwater resources in regions throughout the world is extremely uneven, and the absolute volumes of these resources are limited. This has given rise to concerns about water related issues on a global scale – including the delicate balance between supply and demand – which have arising as a result of trends such as population increase, economic growth, global warming, urbanization, and pollution in the water environment. Hitachi has been devoting its energies to the water environment solutions business as part of efforts to resolve these issues. In recent years, it has contributed to the maintenance and improvement of water environments by providing comprehensive solutions for water infrastructures, including city and sewage water treatment and seawater desalination, which have become the subject of intense demand, particularly in emerging countries. These solutions incorporate elements ranging from components and systems to Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) and related services.

Veolia Water Technologies specializes in technological solutions and design and build projects for water and wastewater treatment, serving municipalities and industries. The company has over ten thousand employees, of which 60% are engineers, researchers and project managers. Earlier this year, Hitachi and OTV (a Veolia Water Technologies subsidiary) secured an order for a large-scale desalination plant in Basra, Iraq, based on which Hitachi and Veolia Water Technologies will undertake EPC and O&M over a period of five years. The two companies have worked together on numerous other water-related projects. It was this background which led to this most recent and closer collaboration.

Based on the memorandum completed between Hitachi and Veolia Water Technologies, the two companies will promote the joint rollout of business targeting city and sewage water treatment, seawater desalination, and other water infrastructure projects, primarily in the Middle East, Africa and Asia region. Through this collaboration, Hitachi will strive to effectively utilize the sales channels and expertise in EPC and O&M that Veolia Water Technologies has cultivated over many years, mainly in the Middle East, Africa, and Asia-Pacific regions.

Hitachi has positioned the water environment solution business as a core field in the context of the Social Innovation Business. It will continue to strengthen collaborations with customers and partner companies in an effort to further strengthen and expand the global rollout of the water environment solutions business.
