Tognum AG +44 7920 205 631 +49 7541 90-4741 Daniela.karthaus@hitachirail-eu.com mirko.gutemann@tognum.com Hitachi Rail Europe selects MTU as preferred supplier of rail power packs for Hitachi Super Express - Biggest supplier contract for Intercity Express Programme - BERLIN, September 19, 2012 – Hitachi Rail Europe Ltd. and the Tognum subsidiary MTU Friedrichshafen GmbH today announced that Hitachi chose MTU as preferred supplier for supplying 250 Powerpacks with 700kW engines of the type 12V 1600 R80L for the Hitachi Super Express Trains and servicing these for the duration of 27.5 years. The contract value exceeds EUR 200 million.
The engines are destined for the Hitachi’s Super Express Trains, which will, as part of the British Department for Transport’s Intercity Express Programme (IEP), replace the UK’s ageing fleet of intercity trains.
For the IEP, Hitachi Rail Europe will provide service and maintain a total of 596 rail carriages (92 trains) destined to run on the East Coast Main Line and the Great Western Main Line. The new rolling stock will consist of a mix of electric and bi-mode trains, to enable them to run on both electrified and non-electrified routes. All trains will be fitted with at least one 700kW MTU Powerpack with Series 1600 twelve-cylinder engine, providing self-rescue capability and hotel power for the electric trains. Bi-mode trains include several MTU engines (depending on train formation) to provide power on non-electrified routes.
MTU will design a bespoke rail power pack arrangement for IEP inclusive of the 12V 1600 R80L engine, Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system to the meet EU stage IIIB emissions requirements, induction generator, cooling system and CAPOS starting system. The design teams of Hitachi and MTU will develop further the winning rail power pack bid design interface and control requirements over the coming weeks.

Notes for editors: - The requirements for the IEP specified a train design capable of providing a flexible approach to a fleet of self-powered and electric trains with self-rescue capability. All trains will have at least one Auxiliary Generator Unit fitted to provide self-rescue capability. The requirement for self-powered trains was fulfilled by increasing the number of under-floor fitted Auxiliary Generator Units, which can be switched on at the end of electrified routes for a seamless journey on non-electrified lines.
- Bi-mode trains are in regular operation in France and other countries throughout the world.
- The Hitachi Super Express Trains will be manufactured in the company’s new manufacturing plant in Newton Aycliffe, County Durham, North East England.
Construction of the plant will start in 2013, and it will be fully operational in 2016. The plant will be capable of manufacturing 35 vehicles per month and will employ 730 people, including a Research and Development facility.
