If you’ve ever watched a crime thriller, you’ll be familiar with the scene of security personnel crowding round a bank of blurry CCTV monitors, trying to identify a suspect. While this makes for tense TV, in real life it doesn’t make for an efficient process.

Luckily, new technology is at hand. Video intelligence technology – such as Hitachi’s Video Analytics – combines a video feed with artificial intelligence to allow footage to be analysed in real-time.

From alerting staff if a train platform is dangerously overcrowded, to identifying lost luggage in a public place, there are many ways in which this technology can help to create a safer world.
