(TSE:6501), today announced that the government of Japan conferred upon Sir Stephen John Gomersall, Deputy Chairman of Hitachi Europe, and former British Ambassador to Japan, the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun at the 2015 Spring Conferment of Decorations. The award is given in recognition of his significant contributions to strengthening and promoting both the economic relationships and mutual understanding between Japan and the UK.

Sir Stephen joined the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in 1970 and served in Japan for a total of 14 years, including as Ambassador to Japan from 1999-2004. His main roles were the promotion of trade and investment between Japan and the UK.

Beginning his career with Hitachi in 2004 as Chief Executive for Europe, he contributed towards the company winning a major UK high speed train order, and introducing the first ABWR (Advanced Boiling Water Reactor) in Europe through the acquisition of Horizon Nuclear Power. He continues to contribute significantly to promote the Japan and UK relationship in various fields.

Sir Stephen said, “I am deeply honoured by this award. Serving as a British Ambassador to Japan as well as Chief Executive for Europe in Hitachi, Ltd., I always believed in that two-way expansion of trade and investment opportunities strengthens both economic relationships.
