Sustainability at Hitachi

We are a climate change innovator – helping governments, cities and companies to cut carbon

The breadth of Hitachi allows us to combine information technology, operational know-how and physical products to tackle climate change - and ultimately improve people's quality of life.  We are applying that same innovation to our own business to become carbon neutral by 2030.

Our Targets
0
Carbon neutral from our own operations
0
Carbon neutral across our entire value chain

Meeting this climate challenge is all about people - clever, committed, collaborative people. Ultimately, it is people who will make the difference.

Our impact

We innovate in pursuit of long-term environmental improvements. We are reducing our CO2 emissions and achieving carbon neutrality throughout our value chain whilst expanding the decarbonisation business. As well as this, we are introducing the Hitachi Internal Carbon Pricing (HICP) framework and renewable energy.

Key Targets

  • Progress of CO2 emission reduction has exceeded target of MMP2024 and expected to reach 64% reduction in FY2024
  • 100% utilization of plastic waste*2 FY2022: 77% (estimation)
  • Zero waste to landfill*2 FY2022: 112 workplaces (estimation)
  • 50% improvement of efficiency in use of water*3 FY2022: 30% (estimation)

*2 FY2030 target, wherever this is compatible with local conditions and regulations

*3 FY2050 target, Baseline is FY2010

Innovating towards carbon neutrality

When it comes to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, we don’t have all the answers. To get there, we’re going to need new and innovative technologies, some of which don’t even exist today. This is why we signed up to be a Global Alliance Member of The Earthshot Prize, the international challenge designed to find and grow the solutions that will repair our planet this decade.

Climate Positive Technologies
Zero Carbon Transport

Better trains, electric buses and fleet vehicles link up for a sustainable future. We manufacture these technologies and provide digital solutions to integrate them with other modes of transport for a joined-up passenger journey. We offer logistics scheduling systems and energy management systems to help customers get the best from their assets.

Zero Carbon Cities and Communities

Decarbonised cities need connected transport, cleaner manufacturing, and smart infrastructure. We develop building, zero carbon electric fleet vehicles and energy management systems to keep things flowing towards a zero-carbon future.

Data Analytics and the Internet of Things

We believe this is the ‘missing link’ to integrating our ecosystems - previously discrete systems (transport, energy, retail delivery etc.) must collaborate seamlessly to keep impacts and costs low. Data is their common currency, and we support customers to collect, analyse and make smart decisions based on it.

Smarter Networks

Smart, digitalised networks can respond to variability and change, and increase the capacity and reliability of the physical assets. As humankind integrates new energy technologies - offshore wind, renewables, electric vehicles, or heat pumps – Hitachi’s digitalized network technology and analytics enables them to work together.

Other Impacts

We help governments, cities and companies to cut carbon. Alongside this activity, we have mature and strong management processes to understand and control our other environmental impacts, including water, biodiversity and waste.
